![]() | Senior workers Age discrimination complaints filed with the federal government peaked in 1993, but have fallen since then. UPDATED - 2003 Age Bias Complaints Up 40 Percent Since 1999. New figures from the federal government show age discrimination complaints have jumped 40 percent in the past four years, from 14,000 in 1999 to more than 20,000 in 2002. "The trend is consistent, cumulative and distriburing." said David Grinberg, spokesman for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. He says the increased in age discimination complaints is linked to a confluence of factors including more older people staying on the job longer and the economic downturn that has led to worker layoffs. But the third factor at work, Grinberg says, is simply "blatant discrimination based on age." Source: AARP Bulletin February 2003 |
