Going It Alone

My mother always worried
About going it alone
Without that special someone
To call up on the phone.
No keys to jingle at your door
No footstepped sounds from walking.
You leave the TV on all night
To hear a stranger talking.

There are a few perks to this state
Of selfish solitude.
The freedom to make choices
That determine thought and mood.
To ponder of the glass of life
Half empty or half full
And never see the drama
Of the jealousies and bull.

Sometimes you might just take a trip
Or stay out late at night.
There won't be anyone at home
To start a senseless fight.
Some holiday-filled moments aren't
What they're cracked up to be.
You long for peace and quiet time
To think or just be free.

There's good and bad in everything.
Nothing is etched in stone.
God's always with you everyday.
You'll never be alone.
