Tearful Gandhi rejects India PM job
Tue 18 May, 2004 16:17
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Sonia Gandhi, heir to India's Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, has tearfully given up her chance to become prime minister to protect her new Congress government from damaging attacks over her Italian birth.
Angry and upset, Congress lawmakers mobbed Gandhi on Tuesday and begged her to change her decision, which paves the way for the architect of the country's modern economic reforms, Manmohan Singh, to take over the world's largest democracy.
"I must humbly decline this post," she told a chaotic party meeting in parliament's timber-pannelled central hall, lined with life-sized portraits of former prime ministers, including her husband, Rajiv, and mother-in-law Indira Gandhi, who were both assassinated. ANGUISHED SCENES
The shock withdrawal by the head of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, India's equivalent of America's Kennedys, triggered anguished scenes at the red sandstone parliament complex and outside her New Delhi home, where hundreds of supporters rallied to press her to change her mind.

President of Indonesia
Born: 23 January 1947
Profile: Megawati Sukarnoputri
With her appointment as Indonesia's fifth president, Megawati Sukarnoputri has inherited the role her father Sukarno established as Indonesia's founding leader.
Megawati is following in her father's footsteps and she has a huge task ahead of her. Years of political instability have left Indonesia's economy in tatters, separatist and sectarian violence threatens to tear the country apart, and although opposition to Wahid may have united the country's politicians it will take immense political skill to maintain their support.
Senior officials from Megawati's party such as Heri Achmadi believe her maternal, if not to say feudal approach to politics is exactly what Indonesia needs right now.

Aung San Suu Kyi Winner of the 1991 Nobel Prize in Peacet

Aung San Suu Kyi born in Rangoon on June 19 1945, third child in family. "Aung San" for father, "Kyi" for mother, "Suu" for grandmother, also day of week of birth.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is the daughter of one of the Burm’s most cherished heroes, the martyred General Aung San, who led his country’s fight for independence from Great Britain in the 1940s and was killed for his beliefs in 1947. Suu Kyi has equaled her father’s heroics with her calm but passionate advocacy of freedom and democracy in the country now called Myanmar, a name chosen by one of the most insensitive and brutal military dictatorships in the world. The ruling junta – "political party" would be too generous a concession – goes by the Orwellian name of the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC).
A watershed in her life was 1988, when Suu Kyi received a call from Burma that her mother had suffered a stroke and did not have long to live. Suu Kyi returned to Burma, leaving her husband and two children behind in England, having cautioned them years earlier that duty may one day call her back to her homeland.
