Bush Pays Tribute to U.S. War Dead
26 May, 2003.
ARLINGTON, Va. (Reuters) -
President Bush, on Monday paid solemn
tribute to the hundreds of thousands of
Americans who have died in war, noting
particularly the loss of those
"who fell in the battle of Iraq".
"Today, we honor the men and women
who have worn the nation's uniform and
were last seen on duty."
"Beyond the Tomb of the Unknowns,
in Section 60 of Arlington Cemetery,
we have laid to rest Americans who fell in the
battle of Iraq," Bush said.
About 140 Americans were killed in Iraq.
Since Bush announced an end to major hostilities
on May 1 and the focus shifted to stabilization
and reconstruction, another two
dozen soldiers have died.
In Afghanistan, the death toll stands
at almost 80.
More than 290,000 Americans lost their lives
in World War II, about 36,000 in Korea
and 58,198 in Vietnam.
The newly launched Veterans History Project
at the Library of Congress is looking for
people to share their wartime memories,
whether they were in the military or a
home-front civilian.
Congress created the Veterans History
Project by an overwhelming vote in 2000
to preserve the accounts of men and women
involved in World War I, World War II and
the Korean, Vietnam and Persian Gulf wars.
The project was spurred by Sens. Max
Cleland, D-Ga., and by Chuck Hagel,
D-Neb.both Vietnam vetsand Reps.
Ron Kind, D-Wis., Steny Hoyer,
D-Md., and WWII veteran Amo Houghton,
R-N.Y.

Notes
Casualties
Even today the number of those killed, military and civilian, in the period covered (1959-1975) is open to debate and uncertainty. To illustrate the problem, below are three reference works by three or more authors listing casualty figures. What is remarkable about them is that the only ones that seem to match are the ones that must be, at best, approximations. None of the figures include the members of South Vietnamese forces killed in the final campaign. Nor do they include the Royal Lao Armed Forces, thousands of Laotian and Thai irregulars, or Laotian civilians who all perished in that peculiar conflict. They do not include the tens of thousands of Cambodians killed during the civil war or the estimated one and one-half to two million that perished in the genocide that followed Khmer Rouge victory
1. Harry G. Summers, The Vietnam War Almanac. Novato CA: Presidio Press, 1985.
U.S. killed in action, died of wounds, died of other causes, missing and declared dead - 57,690. South Vietnamese military killed - 243,748. Republic of Korea killed - 4,407. South Vietnamese civilian dead - 300,000.
2. Marc Leepson, ed, Webster's New World Dictionary of the Vietnam War. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1999.
U.S. killed in action, etc. - 58,159. South Vietnamese military - 224,000. Republic of Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and Thailand - not listed. DRV military - not listed. DRV civilians - 65,000. South Vietnamese civilians - 300,000.
3. Edward Doyle, Samuel Lipsman, et al, Setting the Stage. Boston: Boston Publishing Company, 1981.

KENT STATE-JACKSON STATE Memorial

The memorial on the northwest corner of Morris Hall was dedicated in 1972 to the students who were killed in the Kent State-Jackson State riots in 1970. It states, "HATE, WAR, POVERTY AND RACISM ARE BURIED HERE."
Vietnam War protest
Anti-War Last year, awareness of Viet Nam was
little more than the blunderings of Bellingham police and muffled protests by a dissatisfied few. This year, the question took on a new dimension as the draft board began pulling strings and fifth year seniors began disappearing. The big campus joke was about the prof who gave "V's" instead of "F's" - V for Viet Nam."
